Standing Water in the Garden: What It Is Telling You
The wet months are here, and some gardens are already holding water. A lawn that squelches. A puddle that will not shift. In Ayrshire it is extremely common: high annual rainfall, heavy clay soils and low-lying coastal plots leave the water with nowhere to go.
Two different problems
- Water pooling on the surface after heavy rain. This usually needs the ground regraded to correct falls, with a channel drain or linear drain at the low point, connected to a soakaway or approved outlet.
- Water sitting in the soil itself. This usually needs a French drain or perforated pipe run at depth, with aggregate fill and a soakaway connection.
Why the cause comes first
Installing drainage without understanding what is driving the water is a common and expensive mistake. John diagnoses the cause at the site visit before recommending a solution, and he will not propose one he is not confident will work on your site. Where the water table is high, drainage runs can still meaningfully improve conditions, even if they cannot fully resolve it.
What the work covers
John’s sub-surface drainage work covers perforated pipe runs, French drains, soakaways and inspection chambers, along with ground levelling and grading to falls. All excavated material is removed and the site is left clean. If conditions turn out worse than expected once digging starts, he stops and discusses the options with you.
