Landscaping across Ayrshire — what goes into a JM garden project

Ayrshire’s climate is one of the wetter in Scotland — high annual rainfall, prevailing south-westerly winds and heavy clay soils on many sites mean that landscaping has to be done properly from the ground up. The most common reason new lawns fail or garden projects underdeliver in Ayrshire is inadequate ground preparation: clay subsoil compacted during construction, poor drainage that waterloggs turf in autumn and winter, and raised beds without proper drainage that drown roots in a wet season. John addresses ground conditions before anything goes in — soil improvement, drainage channels where needed, a compacted sub-base under any paving or pathway. A garden built on properly prepared ground in Ayrshire should establish well and look good season after season.

What’s Included

  • Free site survey and written quote before any work starts
  • Ground preparation — soil assessment, subsoil removal where needed, sharp sand and topsoil improvement
  • Drainage installation — French drains and soakaways where waterlogging is present
  • Turf laying with proper sub-base, finish grade and clean edges
  • Raised beds — treated timber or reclaimed sleepers, solid build with drainage base
  • Pathways and stepping stones with compacted sub-base — no rocking slabs
  • Hedging and planting — species selected for Ayrshire’s coastal and inland conditions
  • All waste cleared, site left clean on completion

Which type of work suits your garden?

  • Full garden redesign: consultation, layout plan, full clearance and build from scratch — lawn, beds, planting and paths in one project
  • Lawn laying: soil improvement, drainage assessment, premium turf, finish grade and edge — with sub-base preparation
  • Garden clearance: full strip and remove — overgrown gardens cleared and left as a clean slate
  • Drainage and levelling: French drains, soakaways and level sub-base for waterlogged Ayrshire gardens
  • Raised beds and pathways: treated timber or sleeper beds, pathway with proper compacted sub-base and quality slabs

The right approach depends on what your garden needs most. Many Ayrshire gardens have one underlying problem — usually drainage or compacted clay subsoil — that causes everything else to fail. John identifies the root cause at the free survey and designs the project around fixing it properly, rather than turfing or planting over a problem that will recur the following autumn. Honest assessment, realistic pricing, quality result.

FAQ

Common questions about landscaping in Ayrshire

Straightforward answers to the questions John gets asked most often about garden work across Ayrshire.

Most domestic garden landscaping in Ayrshire does not require planning permission. Turfing, planting, raised beds, pathways and general garden redesign are all permitted development for residential properties. However, there are exceptions worth knowing. If any trees in your garden have a Tree Preservation Order (TPO), they cannot be felled or significantly pruned without written consent from the local authority. If your property is in a conservation area or is listed, additional restrictions can apply to boundary structures and outbuildings. New-build properties sometimes have conditions on the original planning permission that restrict what you can do without further consent. John will flag any obvious concerns at the free survey — if anything is borderline, South Ayrshire or East Ayrshire Council can confirm by pre-application enquiry at no cost.

John works year-round across Ayrshire and most garden projects can be started at any time. For turf laying specifically, autumn and early spring are the best windows — lower temperatures and naturally moist ground help the turf establish without the stress of summer heat. Summer laying is possible but requires more irrigation in the first few weeks to stop the turf drying out before it roots. Structural work — drainage, raised beds, pathways, clearance — can be done in any season and ground conditions willing. For a major redesign, the most practical approach is to get John out for a free survey in autumn or winter, agree the design and materials, then start groundworks as early in the year as the weather allows. That way you’ll have an established garden by late spring.

It depends on the job. For a full garden redesign, John typically recommends a full clearance first — trying to build a new layout around an existing disorganised garden usually adds cost and limits what’s possible. Starting from a clean slate gives more flexibility on layout, drainage and levels. For more targeted work — adding raised beds, a new pathway, improving drainage in one area or laying a new lawn in a defined space — John works around what’s already there wherever practical. At the free survey he’ll assess what’s worth keeping, what’s causing problems and what’s holding the garden back, and give you an honest view on whether clearance first is genuinely necessary or just an easy upsell.
