Autumn Rain and Your Driveway: Why the Base Matters Most

October rain shows a driveway up. Water sits where the surface has sunk, loose blocks rock under the wheels and old tarmac starts to crumble at the edges. If you have been putting up with yours, autumn is when you will see how far gone it is.

It is rarely the surface

The failures John sees most across Ayrshire are crumbling tarmac where the base was never adequate, block paving that has sunk or is rocking because the sub-base was too shallow, and concrete cracked by roots or ground movement. In every case the problem was the preparation underneath. Every quote starts with a proper base assessment. A sound sub-base is kept, and failed sections are dug out and rebuilt instead of patched over.

Where the rainwater goes

All new front garden driveway surfaces in Scotland must either be permeable or drain to a soakaway or planted area on your own land. John checks this at the site visit and advises on the right surface before any work is quoted.

Surface options

  • Resin-bound: fully permeable and very low maintenance, with no weeds and no loose stones
  • Block paving: clay or concrete blocks, with a permeable jointing option
  • Tarmac: open-graded (permeable) or dense macadam, durable and cost-effective for large areas
  • Concrete: reinforced for heavy load areas
