Your Roof Before Winter: Slipped Slates and Flashing Sorted Before the Weather Turns
October is the month to look up. A slipped slate or a strip of failed flashing can sit unnoticed through a dry spell. It will not stay unnoticed through an Ayrshire winter. Better to have it dealt with before the weather turns than to wait for a leak.
Signs your roof needs attention
- Water stains on ceilings or loft timbers after heavy rain
- Daylight showing through the roof boards in the loft
- Slipped or broken slates
- Cracked pointing on the chimney stack
- Open or displaced ridge tiles
- Gutters overflowing or pulling away from the fascia
Why west-facing roofs take the worst of it
Ayrshire is one of the wettest parts of Scotland, and the prevailing south-westerlies wear west-facing pitches harder than the rest. The problems John sees most are failed lead flashing on chimney stacks and dormers, and slipped or broken slates. If your roof has not been inspected in the last ten years, it is worth having it done before the next bad winter.
Repair or re-roof
John inspects the full roof on every visit, not just the reported problem, so you get an honest picture of what needs attention and what can wait. One slipped slate on an otherwise sound roof is a repair job. You get a written quote before any work starts. Do not go up on the roof yourself.
