Draught-proofing · Autumn
Stop the Draughts Before the Heating Goes On
The first cold snap of October is when you find out where the house leaks. A cold strip of air along the hall floor, a letterbox that rattles, a curtain that moves with the window shut. Draughts and failed seals cost money every day through heat loss, and in an Ayrshire winter that adds up fast.
Where the cold gets in
- Round the sides and top of the front and back doors
- Under the door, at the threshold
- Through the letterbox
- Round sash and casement windows
- Along skirting boards and floor edges, where cold air gets in at floor level
Why the DIY strip peels off
The most common problem with DIY draught-proofing is using the wrong type of seal for the location. Brush strips work well on the sides and top of most doors. Compression seals work better on doors that close tightly against a rebate. A threshold seal handles the gap at the bottom. For most exterior doors, John uses a combination of brush strips and a threshold seal to cover all four edges.
What John does when he comes out
He chooses the right strip or seal for each location, so the fix lasts rather than peeling away after a few months. Letterboxes get an internal brush draught excluder or a replacement flap. Gaps at skirting boards and floor edges are caulked. All mess is cleared up and the area is left clean. John is fully insured for all draught-proofing and sealing work.
