Leaves in the Gutters: the Autumn Job to Do Before the Rain
The leaves are coming down across Ayrshire, and a good share of them end up in the gutter. Nothing looks wrong from the ground. Then the first long spell of rain arrives, the water has nowhere to go, and it comes over the side and down the wall instead.
How to tell yours are blocked
- Water spilling over the side of the gutter when it rains
- Staining or damp patches on the outside wall below the roofline
- Drips from the gutter joints
- A gutter that sags or is pulling away from the fascia
- Moss or plants growing in the gutter run
Why autumn is the time
Once a year is the minimum for most houses, and the best time is autumn, after the leaves have fallen. A house with trees hanging over it may need doing twice. Ayrshire is wet, so a blocked gutter turns into a damp wall faster here than it would in a drier part of the country.
What John does when he comes out
He looks at the run from the ladder, clears the leaves, moss and silt, and unblocks the downpipes from top to bottom. A leaking joint can usually be resealed on the same visit, so mention it when you get in touch. Anything that needs repairing is priced and agreed before any work starts.
