Decking built to last every season
From intimate garden corners to full entertaining spaces, we design and build bespoke timber and composite decking that stands up to Scotland’s weather — and looks stunning doing it.
Which decking is right for you?
We install all three main types of decking across Ayrshire. Click any panel below to explore what’s involved, the benefits, and what to expect from JM.
What Is Composite Decking?
Composite decking is engineered from a blend of recycled wood fibres and plastic polymers, giving you the look of natural timber with none of the upkeep. It’s quickly become the most popular choice for Ayrshire homeowners — and for good reason.
Available in hollow-board and solid-board profiles, with matching fascia boards and hidden fixings for a seamless finish. We work with leading brands and help you choose the right colour and texture for your garden and home.
Key Benefits
- No annual staining, oiling, or sanding required
- Resistant to rot, mould, and insect damage
- Colour-stable — won’t fade or bleach in UV
- Splinter-free surface, safe for children and bare feet
- Anti-slip grooved or brushed surface textures
- Handles Scotland’s wet winters without warping or swelling
- Lifespan of 25–30 years with minimal maintenance
Colours & Finishes
Composite boards come in a wide range of tones — from warm natural oak and walnut shades to contemporary greys, charcoal, and dark espresso finishes. Grooved and smooth face options available. Matching trims, fascia boards, and post caps keep the install looking clean from every angle.
What to Expect from JM
- Full site survey and design consultation before any work starts
- Treated structural subframe installed to manufacturer specification
- Hidden fixing system for a nail-free, flush finish
- Boards laid with correct expansion gaps for temperature change
- All waste removed and site left clean on completion
- Written guarantee on materials and workmanship
Ideal for: Homeowners who want a premium, low-maintenance outdoor space that looks great year after year without ongoing work.
Why Choose Timber?
Timber decking has a natural warmth and character that no engineered product can fully replicate. For many homeowners in Ayrshire that authentic, organic look and feel is exactly what they’re after — and when properly maintained it’s a beautiful, long-lasting surface.
Species We Work With
- Pressure-treated softwood pine — cost-effective and durable with the right maintenance regime
- Hardwoods: oak, iroko, balau — denser, more durable, stunning natural grain
- FSC-certified options available for eco-conscious clients
- All timber sourced from reputable suppliers and kiln-dried before delivery
Honest Maintenance Advice
- Requires annual staining, oiling, or decking paint to prevent greying and weathering
- More susceptible to moss and algae in Scotland’s damp climate without regular treatment
- Can be sanded back and refinished to fully restore its appearance
- We advise on the best seasonal maintenance routine at handover
Structural Strength
Timber is structurally strong and ideal for heavier builds, raised platforms, and decks that need to carry significant loads such as hot tubs, furniture, and planters. It’s also easier to cut and adapt on site, making it well-suited to complex shapes and irregular garden boundaries.
What to Expect from JM
- All timber pre-treated before installation for maximum longevity
- Correct joist spacing and noggin placement to prevent bounce and flex
- Boards fixed with stainless steel screws, pre-drilled to prevent splitting
- Correct gapping between boards for drainage and airflow
- Perimeter frame and fascia boards for a neat, finished edge
- Full clean-up and waste removal on completion
Ideal for: Those who love the look of real wood, want a cost-effective option, or have a heavily loaded or complex-shaped deck to build.
What Is Raised Decking?
Raised decking is the solution when your garden isn’t flat, when you want to step directly out of your back door onto a level platform, or when you’re creating a multi-level outdoor living space. It’s more of a structural build than a ground-level deck — and this is where JM’s groundworks and structural experience makes a real difference to the quality of the finished result.
What’s Structurally Involved
- Ground assessment and preparation before any posts go in
- Concrete footings or ground-screw installation for structural posts
- Treated timber subframe — joists, bearers, and posts — engineered to carry the full load
- Decking boards in composite or timber laid to your design
- Balustrades and handrails fitted where required
- Integrated steps, access points, and gate options
- Optional integrated lighting under handrails or between boards
Planning & Building Regulations
In Scotland, raised decking above 300mm from ground level may require a building warrant, and platforms above 600mm require handrails by regulation. We’ll advise you clearly during the site visit on what applies to your specific project and garden, and can assist with the necessary documentation if required.
Most domestic raised deck projects fall within Permitted Development Rights and don’t require full planning permission — but it’s always worth checking, and we’ll help you do that.
What to Expect from JM
- Full structural site survey before quoting — no surprises mid-build
- Groundwork and post installation carried out to building standards
- All structural timber pressure-treated for outdoor use
- Balustrades available in timber, steel cable, or glass panel styles
- Lighting wiring coordinated with your electrician if required
- Comprehensive written quote with full scope before work begins
Ideal for: Sloped or split-level gardens, rear doors that sit above garden level, homeowners wanting a premium multi-level outdoor entertaining area.
